Leket Israel, Israel's National Food Bank

Serving as the country's National Food Bank and largest food rescue network, Leket Israel works to alleviate the problem of nutritional insecurity among the growing numbers of Israel's poor.  Each year, with the help of 45,000 volunteers, Leket Israel rescues over 770,000 meals and 20 million lbs of produce and perishable goods, and supplies over 1.4 million (7,800/school day) volunteer prepared sandwiches to underprivileged children.  Food, that would have otherwise gone to waste, is redistributed to hundreds of nonprofit partners caring for the needy.  Leket Israel offers nutrition education, capacity building, and food safety projects to further assist our partners. Statistics reveal that a quarter of Israel’s 7.7 million citizens (1.9 million people) are living in poverty; among them are some 850,000 hungry children. Yet, at the same time, literally hundreds of thousands of tons of perfectly good, nutritious food are needlessly destroyed each year. Furthermore, studies in Israel indicate that nearly a quarter of the country's population suffers from an imbalanced or insufficient diet due to poverty.

The paradox of nutritional insecurity in the face of large scale food wastage led in 2003 to the establishment of Leket Israel.  Today, serving as the country's largest food bank and food rescue network, Leket Israel's primary mission is to alleviate the problem of nutritional insecurity through the rescue and redistribution of excess food to benefit Israel's needy.  As an umbrella organization, Leket Israel also work's to assist at-risk population groups and the nonprofit organizations (NPOs) who serve them through nutrition education, capacity building, and food safety projects designed to improve professional standards among NPOs and other food provision agencies.

Tonight One Third of Israeli Children Will Go To Bed Hungry  Israel's largest hunger-relief agency is also one of the only comprehensive anti-poverty networks impacting the entire nation. charity initiatives have grown to combat many symptoms of poverty.Over eight hundred and fifty thousand children in Israel live below the poverty line. But poverty doesn’t begin with hunger. Hunger is a symptom.Although poverty rehabilitation begins with food assistance, it doesn't end with it. Collaboration and partnership with hundreds of economic and social welfare programs leads to hunger relief and poverty rehabilitation with lasting effects. With your help, Leket Israel is providing vital support to over 140,000  needy people each week.  Thanks to your help in supporting Israel and helping the poor in Israel, we are breaking the cycle of poverty once and for all.
