Founded in 2006, Sandwiches for Kids enlists hundreds of volunteers to prepare and distribute 8,400 sandwiches each school day for children from underprivileged homes in 115 schools spanning nearly 40 cities from Kiryat Shemona, Tzfat, and Tiberias in Israel's north to Be'er Sheva and Netivot in the south.

Children have been hardest hit by the growing gap between haves and have-nots in Israel in recent years. Recent reports indicate that more than one-third of Israeli children live below the poverty line; among them some 850,000 hungry children. Many of these children attend school without having eaten a nourishing breakfast, and without sufficient lunch supplies to concentrate on their studies.
In 2006, Hands on Tzedakah, a 501(c)3 public charity based in Florida approached Leket Israel to create a program to provide school kids with a minimum of one healthy meal per day. Now in it's seventh year, Leket Israel volunteers prepare and deliver 8,400 mid-morning meals to students from 115 schools throughout Israel. Each school day, "our" kids receive a freshly baked roll filled with hummus, cream cheese, yellow cheese, chocolate spread or tuna, and a fresh fruit or vegetable (usually "rescued" through Project Leket).
