NBN & LEKET ISRAEL TEAM UP
In the spirit of Shavuot, the ‘Harvest Festival’, Nefesh B'Nefesh joined up with Leket Israel, The National Food Bank, and went to pick vegetables for the needy.
The weather was beautiful and the seventy singles and young professionals who attended were motivated and enthusiastic about working in the fields. In a short amount of time, the volunteers managed to pick 800 kilos of beets to feed approximately 200 families in the coming week. There was a diverse crowd of Israelis, Olim from the United States, Turkey, France, Canada and other countries. Everyone worked together and got the chance to mingle in the fields while trying to gather as many beets as possible.
Following the picking a picnic lunch was enjoyed in the Hulda Forest, near the Herzl House - a monument built in 1909 in honor of Theodor Herzl – particularly apropos being that it was surrounded by Olim “living the dream." In fact, Leket Israel itself started as the vision of Joseph Gitler, who made Aliyah himself in 2000. He founded Leket Israel in 2003 after witnessing significant food wastage in Israel at a time of rising poverty. Joseph's vision and steady hand have led the organization from a simple, one-man operation to Israel's largest food rescue organization.
